Make it: Begin with 10 or 20 objects. Encourage your child to count them carefully, developing their one-to-one correspondence.
Split it: Separate the objects into two groups and explore how the two parts combine to make the whole. Use the part-whole model to represent your numbers.
Draw it: Use the ten strip or twenty strip to draw or colour the two groups, helping children visualise how numbers are made.
Show it: Use pom poms, counters or building bricks to represent the two groups on the ten frames, exploring different number combinations.
Write it: Use the two groups to create an addition number sentence. For example, 6 + 4 = 10.
